Laurier’s Shinerama campaign has been very successful in the past and continues to be successful today. We take pride in our community involvement and volunteer initiatives. Every year, volunteers from Laurier’s campaign help out at the CCFF’s Great Strides Walk. We host BBQs throughout the summer and hold a Fountain Campaign at Conestoga Mall, where all the money collected in the fountains for one month is given to Laurier’s Shinerama campaign. Through various Bar Blitzes, where our volunteers go out to local bars and clubs collecting donations in exchange for candy and glow sticks, we are able to raise money for the campaign.
Shinerama has always been an integral and important part of Orientation week at Laurier. Orientation Week, or O-Week as first year students and the volunteers that organize it call it, is an opportunity for new students at Laurier to become familiar and comfortable with their new home. During this week, we host many events at Laurier, all designed to educate the students about Cystic Fibrosis, Shinerama and why it is such an important cause, and why it is so important to Laurier. On the last day of Orientation Week, on what is called Shine Day, the first-year students and the Orientation Week volunteers go out into the Tri-City community and hold car washes, shine windows, shoes and bikes in exchange for a donation. This week, Shine Day is Saturday, September 11, 2010. Students from Laurier will be all over the region so make sure you stop at one of the many Shine Sites to make a difference!
Laurier’s Shinerama campaign allows for new Laurier students to make a positive impact on their new community and allows them to meet many amazing and inspirational people in the process. Students are able to raise money for a good cause while making lasting friendships and amazing memories. Every year at Laurier 400 volunteers and over 3000 first-year students give time and energy in support of Shinerama. Shinerama has become a symbol of Laurier, not just as a positive student activity, but also as an example of Laurier’s commitment to making change and affecting our community in a positive way.
