Enhancement of Student Life Levy

Cost: $10.27 per 0.5 credit to a Maximum Fee of $41.08 per term

  • This fee represents a contribution from the undergraduate student body to the University’s capital campaign. The total contribution to the university is in excess of $3 million and students are the largest single contributors to the campaign. In 1993, a referendum was passed by the students of WLU to approve this fee. Our contributions are designated in three specific areas:

               1) Funding the 1995 expansion of the Fred Nichols Campus Centre

               2) Scholarship and Bursary funds – The most significant portion of this is in the Jim Wilgar bursary fund that has been endowed so the money will always be available. A scholarship in the name of Dr. Lorna Marsden, a former president of the University, was also provided for by the WLUSU donation.

               3) Increased computer and library acquisitions – thus far WLUSU has contributed to the creation and upkeep of numerous computer labs on campus. We have also provided funds each year for an on-line journal research package and a CD-ROM journal research printer.

As well WLUSU has made a major contribution to the Trellis (tri-university library search engine), and to the replacement of the University’s computer backbone. More recently, money has been committed to improve the 3rd Floor of the Students’ Union. Services and programs offered by WLUSU are now more accessible to students.

Fee revenue is assessed and distributed within undergraduate faculties (Arts, Science, SBE, Music and Education) to provide necessary resources needed to manage and run activities and programs for the Laurier student body.

The fee is collected by the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union, and then transferred to Wilfrid Laurier University in order to finance vital repairs to the Pool for the long-term. The referendum question was:

Question: "Do you approve a new ’Pool Improvement Fee’ of $10 per semester per full-time Undergraduate student, pro-rated per course for part-time students, to finance critical repairs to the pool? This fee will commence in September 2009 for the duration of 5 years.”

This fee funds the creation and operation of an Ecological Sustainability Office. This fee is collected by the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union and then distributed to Wilfrid Laurier University as an appendix to the OPA. The referendum question was:

Question: "Do you approve of replacing the current Green Fee of $0.50 per semester with an Eco Fee of $5 per semester, indexed annually to inflation, collected by the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union and distributed to the Wilfrid Laurier University to fund the creation and operation of a Wilfrid Laurier University Ecological Sustainability Office?"
