Legal Resources (LR) is a unique service provided for students by students, helping to better educate the Laurier community through free resources and information regarding their legal rights as tenants and residents in Waterloo. The members of the service have an in depth knowledge regarding the rules and implications of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and use their knowledge to enrich their own skills and more importantly to assist students with any legal issues they face.
In addition to this function of the service, LR also provides a number of opportunities for Laurier students to become informed about their rights as volunteers and as students. First-year talks and “Know Your Rights” sessions are critical components of LR’s services, helping to inform students about their basic rights in the municipality and under the RTA as tenants. As LR volunteers, members will benefit by gaining this knowledge though the education of others.
Legal Resources is not a big service, numbering a modest 30 members this past year. However, LR’s size is not indicative of its importance within the WLUSU and student community. It is a vital service to help protect students when looking and living in rented accommodations and to help them with any legal issues they encounter.
