Position Description

Internal Boosters

Peer Help Line internal prides itself in maintaining confidentiality and anonymity through all aspects of the line. Volunteers are hired on the basis that their identity remains anonymous until their time spent on the service is over. Even before an Internal Booster is hired, all applications and interviews are kept confidential as a way of protecting the volunteer’s identity should they be hired. In the event that you are looking to learn more about the line and what it means to be an Internal Booster, talking over your decision with your Don, the Peer Help Line Coordinator, or the Vice President of Services is recommended. These particular Laurier students understand the secrecy of Peer Help Line, and will be able to help keep you anonymous while helping you come to a decision of which service you would like to get involved with!

Once the Internal Booster is hired, they are then provided with proper training enabling them to answer calls with confidence and reassurance. Training is also provided throughout the year, as a way of educating volunteers more fully on issues that many students experience during their time at university.

Both the Coordinator and Executive Team also work closely with each volunteer to ensure they are comfortable working the line, and know that if they have any questions or concerns we are always available.

External Boosters

External volunteers are seen as the face of the service. They promote the line to Laurier students, essentially playing a vital role in making the line a success. External volunteers also work closely with the Coordinator and Executive Team throughout the year to help organize campaigns around various student issues.

This year we are making a trip to the Brantford Campus in both the fall and winter term. In terms of campaigns, we are holding three campaigns in the fall term and three in the winter term (in the concourse). We are also holding a Bake Sale in January to raise money for the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region.

September- Participation in Orientation Week 2009. Hiring new volunteers and introducing volunteers to the service!

October- Campus Transitions Campaign (Oct. 8-9). Free to be You and Me Campaign (Oct. 29-30).

November- Trip to Brantford. Santa Claus Parade. Supporting Walk for Learning. Suicide and Depression Campaign (Nov. 24-25).

December- Exam Period. Line is open until the last day of exams (Dec. 19).

January – Bake Sale (Jan. 7). Speaker from the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council. Tour of St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener.

February – Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign (Feb. 3-4). Eating for Energy/Eating Disorder Awareness Campaign (Feb. 25-26).

March- Stress Relief Campaign (March 15-16).

External Boosters not only promote the line through these two daylong campaigns in the concourse, but work to raise awareness for various student issues as well. Being an External Booster is a fun and simple way to get involved with WLUSU while making new contacts and building new friendships!!
