Laurier Composting |
|
Laurier and the Ministry of the Environment, have aspirations of achieving at least a 60% waste diversion rate on campus in 2010. In addition to our various recycling programs, we have begun to collect organic waste, from both the service and the prep areas of our food service operations. This September, you will see 3 new multisort recycling stations in the Fresh Food Company and 2 within The Terrace. The compartment in the centre of the station is for all unfinished food waste, biodegradable straws, napkins, cups and containers. A more comprehensive list will soon be available.
These stations give the consumer the ability to sort their own waste and participate in composting at Laurier. The organics waste is picked up by an external contractor and taken to plant to be turned into a usable product, resulting in a closed-loop system. By composting, we divert valuable food scrap material back for a new use, and we reduce our amount of landfill bound waste.
Please learn more about our waste streams on campus and compost what you can, when you can!
